Tall Necks

A series of willowy vases in several shapes and many colors.  I began making these one day when everything else I touched was hitting the floor.  So I just played with my tools, molten glass and some scraps of color.

I had been using a triangular mold I built from graphite, so the first pieces I made with the tall drawn up neck had a triangular base shape, with oval marks on each side where the hot glass had cooled in contact with the graphite. The soft ovals have always reminded me that glass was a fluid when I worked with it.

The lip was created by gripping the glass and pulling the neck up had an uneven shape, and a small crease which spoke to me of the process. It was an imperfection, one usually cut off.

But it has always been my intent for the hands of the maker to remain visible in the finished piece so I cherish those variable shapes and folds. They too remind me of the molten nature of glass as it is blown.

Murrini Hugs

One day I had finished the orders for transparent solid bottles, and the annealer (where the glass cools to destress) was not full.  Not being one to waste money and electricity I decided to play with murrini. I began with round forms, since they are the basic building block of most forms, and sprinkled murrini on a plain white background.  A simple cylinder, I thought, but very quickly it became a round T Neck bottle, with a nontraditional placement of murrini.

The class I had taken most recently had caused a plethora of square murrini to accumulate.  So I lined them up in the clamshell preheating oven, rolled a fresh gather of molten glass across the line holding my work at a slight angle.  Traditionally the gaffer is very careful to place his work square across the pattern,  matching every single circle of colored glass in a perfect pattern.

But I am a modern glass artist, and rules are meant to be a tools, not  boundaries, so the Murrini Hug was born!
